We met up with Van and the rest of the WATERS crew on a Wednesday at their manager’s house in Silver Lake. The Bay Area / SLO native / former Port O’Brien frontman was in town with his new project for a one-off at the Satellite in the midst of a pretty non-stop touring schedule. Everyone was in good spirits (between songs they were merrily rehearsing Christmas-themed renditions of their own tunes), despite a fairly unorganized and awkward attempt to cram everyone and their instruments into a not-so-large kitchen (there were literally amps on top of the stove and next to the coffee-maker).
The boys ran through 4 quick songs (one Van played acoustic outside). They actually plugged the acoustic through a little battery powered amp, distorting it to the point of almost indistinguishable noise, yet somehow that decidedly rough around the edges feel completely works. Sure, these songs could all be done slow and sweet, tidy intimate singer-songwriter folk, but there’s something more compelling in the dirtiness of it.
